ENTOSCAN: FREE SLIDE SCANNING & DIGITAL IMAGES
THIS
PROJECT IS NOW CLOSED. Thank you for your participation, with your help we
scanned over a 1,000 images!
Project Goal:
The goal of this project is to create a free online library of extension,
teaching, and research images on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) for use by
anyone. To begin building the library, we request slides with insect-related
material represented in the images. This is an opportunity for you to turn
those old slides into professionally edited digital images for FREE.
You may submit your old slides during the open period (03/17/04 – 05/17/04) and you will
receive free scanning, digital image clean-up, and 2 CD copies of your images
(images in both low and high resolution (.jpeg/.jpg)). We request that you
describe each slide you submit by filling out the easy-to-use EntoScan Slide Form A (Microsoft Word)
. Simply check off the categories/keywords the slide image fits into, add your
personal keywords and notes and send them to us!
Submission

EntoScan FAQ:
1) What kinds of
material are appropriate to send in?
We are currently only accepting insect related material, that is, any slides
that depict good examples of pests, pest damage, pest management practices
(biological control, cultural measures, chemical controls, etc.), and other teaching/education
materials (slides for talks) on the topic of insect pest management. Word or
chart slides will not be scanned, except for good cartoon-type slides depicting
life cycles or flow diagrams of IPM activities. Future announcements will
address related disciplines such as nematology, weed
science, and plant pathology.
2) How long will
it take to get my slides back?
About 1 week after receiving, all slide packages received by May 17th, 2004,
will be postmarked for return no later than June 20th.
3) What format do
you use to store the digital images?
All images will be stored in jpeg (.jpg) format at high (~2400 dpi) and low
resolution (300 dpi). High resolution images will allow for additional editing
without significant loss of quality. Low resolution images will be in a
“use-ready” state, and should be expected to lose quality each time
they are edited and saved.
4) What will I
get for sending my slides?
You will receive 2 CD copies of your slides in digital formats. Each slide will
be scanned and edited to improve quality, and you may request “photo
credits” be stamped at the bottom of each slide. In addition, all images
submitted including yours would become available in the online digital library
for your access on the world wide web. We have already
scanned over 1000 images of agricultural insect pests and pest damage (from
slide collections of Jim Linduska, Lee Hellman, and Galen Dively).
For more information,
send requests to Miles Lepping or Galen Dively.
